Your Home Readiness Checklist

Complete the following Home Readiness Checklist to see whether you’re at risk from emergencies and disasters. The Checklist contains 25 quick questions about your level of preparedness in the home and exposure to natural disasters. After completing the Checklist, you’ll receive a Home Safety Risk Rating and further detail on areas that you may be at risk from based on the information you provided in the checklist. Once you have this information, start preparing yourself for an emergency by viewing our Safety Action Plans and Safety Shop at firstaction.com.au.

The Home Readiness Checklist is provided as a free tool to educate home owners on risks from emergencies and natural disasters. By taking the Home Readiness Checklist, the user acknowledges that this tool may not address all potential risks; it will not in itself protect the user from injury or prevent damage to property; and should not be relied upon as the sole source of information for staying safe in the home. When using the tool, the user agrees to take full responsibility for assessing the relevance, completeness, currency and accuracy of its content.

In the event of an emergency, the user should immediately contact emergency services on 000 and ask for police, fire or ambulance. For general advice on preparing for an emergency, the user should review the Safety Action Plans provided at firstaction.com.au. For further non life threning assistance or specialist advice, the user should contact their local council or emergency services provider.

Home Readiness Checklist Questions:

1 Have you or a member of your family completed an accredited first-aid course in the past 3 years

2 Do you have a well-stocked and up-to-date first-aid kit in your home?

3 Do you have smoke detectors installed throughout your home?



4 When was the last time you checked to see if your smoke detectors were working?



5 Do you have quick access to a fire extinguisher or fire blanket in case of a kitchen fire?

6 Are any doors in your house dead locked from the inside?

7 Do you ever leave your clothes dryer on when you’re out of the house or asleep?


8 Do you ever leave heaters on when you’re out of the house or asleep?


9 Do you ever place items of clothing on heaters?

10 Are any double adaptors plugged into other double-adaptors or power-boards within your home?


11 Have you and your family discussed how to escape from your home during a fire?


12 Do you have any loose or damaged tiles/roofing material that could come loose during strong winds or a storm?



13 Do you have any loose items or rubbish around your property that could cause damage during strong winds or a storm?


14 Have you checked your gutters recently to ensure that they are free of leaves and other debris?



15 Do you live in a designated flood prone area?


16 If you live in a flood risk area, have you developed a flood plan and adequately prepared your property?



17 Do you live in a cyclone prone area?


18 If you live in a cyclone prone area, have you taken steps to prepare both your family and your property?



19 Do you live in a designated bush fire prone area?


20 If you live in a bush fire prone area, have you developed a bush fire survival plan and adequately prepared your property?



21 Do you have mobility-impaired persons living in your home?

22 Do you have home insurance that is current and sufficient to cover loss or damage to your property from fire, storm, flooding and other relevant emergency events?



23 Are all dangerous chemicals stored in a safe manner, out of reach of children and away from naked flames?



24 Do you have a current inventory of your household items including make, model, serial numbers and photographs?

25 Do you have immediate access to important documents, medications and other key items if you had to evacuate your home quickly?
